Understanding the Physical Presence Requirement for Canadian Citizenship
September 10, 2026 · Canadian Citizenship Prep
The 1,095-Day Rule
To be eligible for Canadian citizenship, you must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) within the 5 years before the date you sign your application. This is known as the physical presence requirement.
How Days Are Counted
Permanent Residents
Each day you are physically present in Canada as a permanent resident counts as one full day.
Temporary Residents and Protected Persons
If you lived in Canada as a temporary resident or protected person before becoming a permanent resident, each day counts as half a day (up to a maximum of 365 days credit).
Time Outside Canada
Days spent outside Canada do not count toward the requirement, with some exceptions for Crown servants (government employees posted abroad) and their family members.

Common Scenarios
Scenario 1: Straightforward PR
If you became a PR and have lived continuously in Canada, you are eligible after 3 years.
Scenario 2: Time as a Temporary Resident
If you were a student or worker in Canada before getting PR, those days count at half value (max 365 days credit).
Scenario 3: Travel for Work
If your job requires travel outside Canada, those days do not count. Plan accordingly and track your absences carefully.
