Chapter Breakdown

Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship

This chapter covers the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, equality rights, mobility rights, language rights, and the responsibilities that come with citizenship (obeying the law, serving on a jury, voting).

Key focus: Know the difference between rights and responsibilities. Understand the Charter.

Who We Are

Covers Canada's diverse population, including Aboriginal peoples (First Nations, Inuit, and Metis), English and French heritage, and immigration patterns.

Key focus: Aboriginal peoples, the three founding groups, and multiculturalism.

Canada's History

The longest chapter. Covers everything from Aboriginal history through European exploration, Confederation, the World Wars, and modern Canada.

Key focus: Key dates (1867 Confederation, 1982 Constitution), important figures, and major events.

Modern Canada

Covers Canada's role in international affairs, the Commonwealth, NATO, NORAD, peacekeeping, and post-war social developments.

Key focus: International organizations Canada belongs to, and major post-war developments.

How Canadians Govern Themselves

Explains the three levels of government (federal, provincial, municipal), the parliamentary system, the role of the monarchy, and how laws are made.

Key focus: How Parliament works, the roles of PM/Governor General/Lieutenant Governor, and the three branches of government.

Federal Elections

Covers how elections work, who can vote, the electoral district system, and the role of political parties.

Key focus: How a government is formed, what a riding is, and the secret ballot.

The Justice System

Covers the rule of law, the court system, and types of law in Canada.

Key focus: Difference between civil and criminal law, the role of the police, and presumption of innocence.

Canadian Symbols

Covers the flag, the maple leaf, the beaver, the national anthem, Parliament buildings, and other national symbols.

Key focus: What the symbols represent and their history.

Canada's Economy

Covers key industries, trade partnerships (especially CUSMA), natural resources, and the service economy.

Key focus: Major industries by region, and Canada's trading partners.

Canada's Regions

Covers the five regions, provinces, territories, capitals, and notable features of each.

Key focus: Province/territory capitals, regional characteristics, and population distribution.

Study Priority
